Fry, Inc. Launches Checkout Redesign for Panasonic Consumer Electronics Site

Usability testing was key for more streamlined process

ANN ARBOR, Michigan - Fry, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of MICROS Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRS) and a leading e-commerce solutions provider, today announced the launch of a redesigned e-commerce checkout process for Panasonic, a market and technology leader in high definition consumer and digital electronics products.

After analyzing the checkout process for www.panasonic.com and identifying key challenges based on e-commerce and user experience best practices, Fry conducted usability testing and heuristic evaluation to provide a new user interface and creative design for the site’s consumer electronics checkout.

Fry formed a focus group based on Panasonic’s customer demographics and gave participants a scenario involving a specific purchase on the site. Findings indicated that customers wanted more visible shipping information, better visual cues for adding products to the cart, and clearer indications of order and security messages due to the number of large purchases made.

“We wanted to optimize our current checkout process and sought a redesign based on concrete principles and research,” said Merwan Mereby, Panasonic’s vice president, new business development and eBusiness. “Fry’s knowledge and experience with e-commerce best practices and their in-depth look into our process was essential and ultimately produced the clear, user-friendly checkout our customers wanted.”

Due to the site redesign, Panasonic customers now experience a more streamlined purchase process. In addition to shipping and billing information displayed on one page, customers will see a progress bar with numbered steps as a visual reminder of the process. The new checkout also features an order summary pod that appears along the right side of the page throughout the process to provide the customer with a clear understanding of all charges, including tax and shipping.

“This is another great example of how Fry helps companies increase conversion online,” said David Fry, president of Fry. “By making the checkout process simpler and easy to use on customer-facing pages, Panasonic will see a significant decrease in shopping cart abandonment as well as gains in revenue from transactions that previously were not being completed.”
